Introducing Code Digs, A Website That Makes Coding Fun

July 03 21:36 2017
In the modern world, computer science can be found at the heart of nearly everything. Here to provide some insight into the world of computer science is Code Digs, a family-friendly website that makes learning to code both fun and interactive.

In the technology-driven world of today, the vast majority of quality jobs seem to revolve around the realm of S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). These S.T.E.M. jobs seem to pay the best and have the best outlook for the years to come. As a result, teachers and parents around the world have begun introducing S.T.E.M. fields to children at early ages, enthralling them with the wonders of the natural world. However, a child-friendly introduction to the world of computer science, a vital application of S.T.E.M. subjects, has long eluded instructors. And as a result, there are thousands of job openings for computer scientists and few children showing interest in the field. Here to remedy this issue while entertaining children with a new learning format is a web platform by the name of Code Digs.

Code Digs was designed to be both educational and entertaining, allowing children to understand their progression through various topics in order to build their own drive to learn. The website currently revolves around three main levels of ‘difficulty’ called tracks including a beginner track, an intermediate track, and an advanced track. Within each track there are a variety of lessons ranging from a website creation module to a game design section, allowing children to explore suitable subjects that genuinely interest them. To break it down even further, each lesson has a set of ‘steps’ that contain little bits of knowledge and provide the content of the lesson.

For example, the website creation lesson has a step covering the parts of a webpage. These steps get their points across using pictures, videos, an interactive coding platform, previews, and more, providing a full learning experience to fit the needs of any student. As an added benefit, students earn points to be spent on aesthetics that can be used on the Code Digs platform, motivating their progression. Students can even share the games and websites they create with their class or teacher, showing just how much they have learned.  However, creating this vast and interactive curriculum is an ongoing task. To keep Code Digs’ content constantly up-to-date and expanding, the Code Digs team has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Through the campaign page, readers can order access to the Code Digs curriculum for their children or students while supporting the Code Digs team. With this support, the Code Digs team is excited to be bringing the wonders of computer science to children everywhere.
