The Benefits of High School Sports for Teens

April 22 15:07 2015

Everyone knows that playing sports has a wide range of health benefits. However, there is a wealth of other benefits to be gained from playing sports as well, especially for teenagers. Kids in the House interviewed Drs. Thomas Grogan and Michael Gervais, and Natalie Hawkins, mother of US Gymnastics gold medalist Gabby Douglas, and compiled their list of the top benefits of high school sports for teens.

Dr. Thomas Grogan conducted his own study, which showed that high school students participating in sports had higher grade point averages during the season than they had when the season was over. While the specific reason for that wasn’t determined, Dr. Michael Gervais feels that it is because participating in sports increases a child’s ability to focus. When teenagers are playing football, basketball, or swimming, for example, they learn how to be fully engaged and present in what they are doing.

Natalie Hawkins points to greater time management skills as a primary benefit of sports for teens. When children know they need to be present for a sport they enjoy at a certain time, it helps them learn to accommodate homework and social time into their schedule. In fact, children will often hold their parents accountable when it comes to getting to practices and games on time.
